Helpful Hands

Helping the Homeless During COVID-19

Introduction

Helpful Hands is a youth community service group that helps alleviate the needs of local homeless shelters. At the beginning of the pandemic, the homeless were one of the most alienated groups by society and also among those extremely vulnerable to COVID-19. Thus, Helpful Hands was launched in hopes of easing the mask shortage. Afterward, Helpful Hands expanded its activities to clothes drives and community yard sales to raise supplies for homeless families. The organization also offers young people an opportunity to give back to others through acts of kindness.

What We Did

Our goal was to use computer programming skills to help Helpful Hands create a website detailing the organization’s purpose and contributions. In our initial stages, we used Figma to prototype and lay down the visual design for the web page. We then transitioned to using HTML and CSS to write the code that would become the backbone of the site. With various team members assigned to different subsections and means of clear communication, our group was able to finish this task efficiently and effectively.

Impact On Community

Our website provided a centralized display of Helpful Hand’s past activities and upcoming events. The website helped spread awareness about the organization within the community. Also, the website provided information on opportunities to support and participate in this great cause.
