Cary Memorial Library AAPI Photo Exhibition

Introduction

The Asian-American Pacific Islander (AAPI) art exhibition at Cary Memorial Library includes a number of works submitted by members of the AAPI community in Lexington. The pieces range from photographs to drawings and are located in the Piper, Pierce, and Large Meeting Room Galleries. Our goal was to create a website that features a scavenger hunt game centered around the exhibition. By encouraging public participation, we hoped to amplify the voices of AAPI artists, thus helping them share unique cultural traditions and celebrate Asian American contributions to our town.

What We Did

Our group met at the Cary Library to visit the exhibition and brainstorm ideas for our interactive game. Once we decided on the structure of the game, we assigned various group members to different tasks. Some of us worked on writing hints for the scavenger hunt, while others organized the graphics and design of our web page. We used HTML and CSS to code the site, then added Google Forms for player entries and images as a final touch.

Throughout the process, we used platforms such as Zoom to discuss the specifics of our project and analyze the feedback we received from volunteer test runs. This allowed us to improve the clarity of our game instructions before formally publishing the website. The art exhibition is currently still being held and will close at the end of June.

Impact On Community

This project recognizes the importance of Lexington’s AAPI community by introducing their involvement in town wide activities to the public. The exhibition not only showcases the many unique aspects of AAPI culture, but also emphasizes the common ground and sense of unity among Asians in Lexington. It creates an opportunity for AAPI artists, regardless of their age, to express what their identity means to them through a creative medium. Such new perspectives help initiate meaningful discussions regarding race, diversity, and other crucial topics.
